Malaria is a serious and at times fatal disease caused by an infectious parasite that can live within a mosquito that feeds on humans. These mosquitos breed in numerous areas and have affected many populations causing many people to suffer from its painful symptoms and effects of the disease. Researchers have been conducting tests on whether deforestation does in fact increase cases of malaria in hopes to increase the ability to control malaria’s outbreaks in certain areas.The increase in population in many areas is causing there to be an increase in deforestation due to the needs for land for settlement, cultivating agriculture and extracting resources. Research has shown that deforestation does increase the rate of malaria because of the environmental changes of breeding sites and humans moving to and from forested ar eas. Malaria’s parasites most commonly and successfully infects the female Anopheles mosquitoes and those humans that are bitten by these mosquitos, however they are both affected by the parasite differently.In humans the parasite begins by infecting the liver where it matures and begins to breed and multiply. After multiplying they begin infecting the blood stream and attacking the host’s red blood cells. These parasites continue this cycle by consistently infecting more and more red blood cells. Unlike humans the mosquito is not harmed when infected by the parasite. When a Anopheles female mosquito feeds on a human carrying this parasite a new cycle of growth and multiplication takes place in the mosquito. The parasite begins in the mosquitos stomach and then travels to the midgut wall of the mosquito where they breed and multiply.After 10-18 days, the parasites are found as â€Å"sporozoites† in the mosquito's salivary glands. (The Malaria Lifecycle 2006) Whe n the Anopheles mosquito feeds on another human, the sporozoites are injected with the mosquito's saliva and start another human infection. The mosquito transfers the parasites to multiple people by biting them and therefore acts as a vector for the disease. In one study it is said that deforestation is the largest contributing factor to malaria out of the many environmental changes and its rates are expected to increase. Where malaria is found depends mainly on factors such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall.Malaria is transmitted in tropical and subtropical areas, where Anopheles mosquitos can survive and multiply and where malaria parasites can complete their growth cycle in the mosquito. Research has recognized that deforestation increases malaria risk in Africa and the Americas and lessens it in South-east Asia. (Guerra, Snow, and Hay 2006) Malaria in the Amazon has been caused by ecosystem changes which were caused by human migration and opening of land for agricultural re asons, cattle, and natural resource extraction as well as deforestation and reforestation.The change in the ecosystems relates to the promotion or suppression of Anopheles darlingi, or the number one malaria vector in the Amazon, is ultimately the most important factor. An. darlingi is the most important malaria vector in the Amazon region. When deforestation takes place there are less trees to shade the given area of land and the acidity and chemical composition of the soil changes. This environmental change often creates favorable conditions for the breeding of An. darlingi and therefore increases the local risk of human malaria. Government sponsored colonization projects and significant migration, which took place with the help of deforestation, have resulted in malaria outbreaks.The â€Å"frontier malaria† phenomenon is exhibited in the Brazilian Amazon, among many other places, which increases the rate of malaria among humans. This frontier malaria then consists of more stable and low rates of transmission of malaria. This research states that the risk of being bitten by the primary malaria-carrying mosquito, A. darlingi, is nearly 300 times higher in cleared areas than in those that are largely undisturbed. (Meadows 2006) A study reported in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene shows how deforestation is a contributing factor to the increase in malaria outbreaks.The study was cond ucted in the Loreto district of northeastern Peru, where malaria has risen from 600 cases in 1992 to 120,000 in 1997. Loreto’s population is increasing causing there to be increase is deforestation in order for more settlements such as roads for plantain, cassava, and other subsistence crops. As stated earlier, clearing forest for cropland also often creates better or more breeding sites for the A. darlingi mosquito by providing deep water and short vegetation. Researchers in Loreto experimented by measuring the rate of An. arlingi bites to test whether the population was the primary factor in the increase in malaria cases or whether deforestation was. They found that population size had no effect on the An. darlingi bite rate, but that deforestation had an enormous impact on it. The rate was 278 times higher in areas with the least forest and the most grass/crop land than in areas that were undisturbed. Veterinarians are physicians who help diagnose and treat diseases in animals. With continuous checkups, veterinarians can help control and prevent illness and disease in the animal. As stated by pet care, no matter how careful animal owners are, there will be a time when animals need to visit the vet. Though some believe vets can only offer an examination, they actually can do so much more. Vets are capable of spotting certain illnesses before they take full effect through blood test. They can repair joint or ligament, and they even provide professional grooming. Visiting the vet can prolong animals lives with the physicals done, and making sure animals have all their vaccinations. The major benefit for animals that go to the vet is that they are healthy. But the duties of veterinarians just dont stop at making sure animals are healthy. They make sure the meats people eat are healthy by testing the animal for diseases, monitoring the transportation of the animal, and the slaughtering of the now meat. A veterinarian can decide their specialty based off where they grew up at and the location of where their practice is at or will be at. There are three major categories that a veterinarian can specialize in; small, large, and exotic. Small animals are mostly known as the house pets, and they usually go to clinics or private practices. Clinics can be used for the larger animals, but they are mostly used for small animals. Clinics and private practices provide a waiting area, appointments, emergency appointments, and boarding areas. The major difference between a clinic and private practice is that a clinic is run by the government and a private practice is run by one person, the owner. The next specialties for a veterinarian are large animals. These animals tend to be farm animals, like cows, horses, and sheep. The main reason veterinarians do home visits for these types of animals is because of their size, the population they come in because its just not one cow at the farm. Equestri an veterinarians can also fall under this category, they focus in just horses. Those veterinarians tend to focus more on the unique horses, like ones that race or designer breed horses. The last type of animal that a vet can specialize in is exotic animals. These animals tend to be zoo animals; they can be monkeys, iguanas, ferrets or potbellied pigs. Depending on if they are located at the zoo, there will be a special veterinarian located at the zoo that runs their own private practice. Depending on the size of these exotic animals, that are pets to some people; they would go to a specific private practice for exotic animals only. But, if they are large exotic animals, a specific veterinarian would make a special home visit. Though there are three different specialties, there are veterinarians that will run a private practice for all types of animals and make home visits for all types of animals. As most people probably already know, the main reason to visit the vet is to help keep their animal healthy and living longer. But taking them to the vet can ensure you that there are professionals back there taking care of the grooming process. Then another con about going to the vet would be if the veterinarian found something wrong. While performing their checkups there are possibilities of them finding a tumor or another illness. Then it will be expensive to pay for surgeries or medicine necessary for the animal to recover. Of course, the pros outweigh the cons. Having an animals life become longer and healthier is worth the cost sometimes. Visiting the veterinarian is mostly for the animals wellness checkup. A wellness checkup is just checking the animals out and making sure things are normal. The veterinarians evaluate the overall health of the animal and try to detect serious illnesses before they turn into something bad or terminal. When people think of surgeries being performed by a vet, they think mostly of removals. But vets can perform many more types of surgeries, like neutering and spaying of house pets. The Power Struggle in The Yellow Wallpaper      Ã‚   The story "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a story about control. In the late 1800's, women were looked upon as having no effect on society other than bearing children and keeping house. It was difficult for women to express themselves in a world dominated by males. The men held the jobs, the men held the knowledge, the men held the key to the lock known as society   - or so they thought. The narrator in "The Wallpaper" is under this kind of control from her husband, John. Although most readers believe this story is about a woman who goes insane, it is actually about a woman’s quest for control of her life. The narrator is being completely controlled by her husband. The narrator's husband has told the her over and over again that she is sick. She sees this as control because she cannot tell him differently. He is a physician so he knows these things. She also has a brother who is a physician, and he says the same thing. In the beginning of the story, she is like a child taking orders from a parent. Whatever these male doctors say must be true. The narrator says, "personally, I disagree with their ideas" (480), and it is clear she does not want to accept their theories but has no other choice. She is controlled by her husband. Control is exemplified later in the story in the choice of rooms in which she must stay. She has no say whatsoever in this decision. She is forced to stay in a room she is uncomfortable with. This is the bedroom in which John has trapped her; this room is not a room in which she wants to be. The windows are barred and the bed is bolted down. This is a subliminal clue of control. Conrad’s Congo Journey Joseph Conrad’s own experiences during his trip through the Congo helped him provide a foundation for the writing of Heart of Darkness. In 1890, Conrad took a job as a captain on the river steamer Kinshasa. Before Conrad took this job, he had worked for the French merchant navy as a way to escape Russian military service and also to escape the emotional troubles that had plagued him. Conrad had been in a financial crisis that was resolved with help from his uncle. After this series of events, Conrad joined the British merchant navy at the beckoning of his uncle and took the job as the captain of a steamboat in the Congo River. An important fact to remember is that Conrad was a young and inexperienced man when he was exposed to the harsh and dangerous life of a sailor. His experiences in the West Indies and especially in the Belgium Congo were eye opening and facilitated his strong outlooks that are reflected in the book Heart of Darkness. Conrad’s journey th rough the Belgian Congo gave him the experiences and knowledge to write about a place that most Europeans would never see in their lives. The diaries Conrad kept during his journey through the Congo gives detailed descriptions of the monotonous African landscape. Conrad wrote that the landscape of the African coast looked the same every single day.[1] This is reflected in Marlow’s narration of the jungle where shapes and forms cannot be made out clearly. The monotonous landscape differed from what Conrad had expected of this exotic location. When he was still a young kid, he had once boasted that he would someday journey to the heart of Africa. However, the actual journey was not at all what he expected it to be. Conrad was shocked at the men in the African colony. He was repulsed by the European colonizers because of the horrible treatment of the natives as well as the unlawful aggressive pursuit of loot. Conrad witnessed atrocities committed by the European colonizers, which helped to form his opinions on the colonization of Africa. In the novel, Conrad uses sarcasm to display his displeasure towar ds the European colonizers’ treatment of the natives.
